# What is subscriber verification? A referral eligibility check

Subscriber verification is a named program’s check that a referred signup meets its stated eligibility criteria.

Referral networks use verification to decide whether a signup meets their program rules. That status does not necessarily control whether the person remains subscribed to your publication.

## Separating billing status from list status

Illustrative beehiiv example: 100 readers subscribe through recommendations; 60 later pass verification and 40 fail. Under the documented behavior, failed referrals are not charged and are not automatically removed. Unless a separate cleanup action changes the list, 100 people may remain subscribed even though only 60 passed the billing check.

## The platform may leave a person on the list

Check later behavior separately: a verified referral may never become a regular reader, while a failed referral may remain on the mailing list under the platform’s rules. Use the provider’s status for billing reconciliation and your own defined reader outcome for evaluating acquisition value.

## Keep the signup date when billing status changes

When a referral is accepted or rejected later, record that decision beside the original signup. This keeps your acquisition group intact. Moving accepted signups into the billing month would make it harder to compare how readers from the same campaign behaved.
